There is a SCSI Communication Device standard. Some people even used it
to connect two or more computers in a cluster and there is an experimental
RFC2143 for encapsulating IP over SCSI.

SAS would actually make quite a good network link layer for some applications. It has guaranteed per request latency, automatic link aggregation and network topology auto discovery. Although the link aggregation logic could do bad things to the frame arrival order.
