Yeah, -o is very different from -c 1.

In particular, I want to get an alert when a distant machine comes back
up, so I was going to do something like

(ping -i 60 -o; echo it\'s up | mail mouse) &

but it's behind NAT for v4 but has direct v6, hence the desire for
something similar with ping6.

Okay, I'll create patches for the OS revs I run.  One of them might be
useful as a starting point for more recent NetBSD, if anyone cares to
and I get to it first.
