You might want to try the lftp client (available under pkgsrc/net/), it
is a very featureful client which supports IPv6 (I assume you need EPSV
for IPv6), SSL and SFTP.

I had to check the man page of your ftp(1) just in case, but see no
mention of SSL/TLS support...
