That could indeed be a problem. Do you have a spare switch (100MBit/Sec
or better 1GBit/Sec) you could connect to that part to see how well
that copes with the cable?

Testing GbE would still be worthwhile. Could you perhaps directly
connect your laptop to that switch over a short cable to see if
auto negotiation works faster?
