Can you disconnect the modem from the DSL line (and does it sync when
you reconnect it)?

My theory is that if you resync the modem and then wait 1-2minutes,
your pppoe connection will work again - but if your underlying atm
connection does not recover, that will not work (obviously).

If you can't test this, please try to get a tcpdump from your tap interface
when the problem happens.
