   FYI, I did manage to find a way around my PPPoE problem. (The CBCP
thing was a red herring.) I have a static IP address, and I had had
trouble in the past with receiving a dynamic address instead, so I had
the following in my ifconfig.pppoe:

inet my.static.ip.addr 0.0.0.1

which seemed to do the job up until yesterday. Replacing the static
address with 0.0.0.0 got me back online.

   Thanks to the folks who helped me work through the problem.
