Primarily, because I have been unable to set it up in such a way that
the link comes back up reliably after every combination of reboot
timing between the two machines.

Secondarily, because it has a tendency to take the interface down when
the peer machine goes down or the wire is disconnected. (This can be
valuable in some circumstances; in mine it's of negative value.)

It may be possible to fix these, but the result would be comparatively
fragile. SLIP is too simple for much to go wrong with it. Its only
disadvantage for my purposes is the lack of v6 support - which is
precisely what I was proposing to fix.
