Those numbers are "high" because the server has a very short uptime at
the point they wre sampled, and because I was purposefully loading up
the local LAN to try and reproduce the problem.
I wouldn't call them anywhere near "insane" though! I've worked on
10mbit ethernets with 25% collision ratios! Now they were insane!
If NetBSD now craps out at 5% collisions then something's majorly wrong
with it, or at least with the rtk driver. Even crappy hardware
shouldn't cause such freezes, at least not without any error messages
being logged!
As for the drop count, well it does seem to be the sole indicator that
something's going wrong -- there have been no freezes since yesterday
and as you can see the drop count has remained the same. It only seems
to climb if there's been a freeze.
Here are the numbers after about a day of uptime:
# netstat -ind

I have changed rtk1 to "media auto", but I now remember why I must use
"media 10baseT" on rtk0 -- it will not auto-negotiate with my hub
otherwise.
Maybe before I finally rack it I'll swap in my spare 21041 cards anyway....
I guess I could move it to the remaining switch port then too (I can't
now because I don't have a long enough cross-over cable to reach the
bench and I don't feel like "wasting" an RJ45 end to make one up for
temporary use). The traffic load normally doesn't really warrant a
switch port though....
