The defaults are not well documented, nor are they trivial to
increase.

I also ran out, and increased to something like 10k entries, and still
ran out.

In one case, the machine was a firewall for about 20 other hosts.  In
the second case, it was a large www server.  In both cases, the out of
the box defaults were way too low.
