     The problem is with writeing, not reading.

} The modem should NEVER be printing anything if it's 'getty' that's
} managing it.  Turn off all that stuff!!!!

     Smart gettys need to see the connect string to determine what type
of call it is (i.e. DATA/FAX/VOICE) as well as get caller-id
information.  Welcome to modern modems and programs designed to handle
them.
