I wrote, yesterday, of an issue with 9.1 audio not working (it just
wasn't moving the bits).

I am pleased to report that using a 10.1 kernel (with the same
9.1-based userland) appears to fix this.  I don't have physical access
to the hardware I've been doing this on, so I don't know whether it's
actually driving a signal out the jack or not, but the bits are moving.
