Turns out I misunderstood.

X works fine when started manually from a full system.  The performance
problem strikes when a 10.1 kernel is dropped in when setting up a
*production* system, with severely stripped-down userland.

This introduces a whole bunch more possible reasons for the failure.
I'm going to have to investigate before I can really say more.  My
apologies to everyone for the wild-goose-chase post.  Well, semi-;
there likely *is* a real problem, but there are now a lot more places
it could be coming from.
