You are correct, I want to completely replace it all with my own
software.

Why do you expect it to be a non-starter?  To me that's the whole point
of getting hold of an open phone to begin with, to get rid of
mainstream phone software (which invariably, in my experience, insists
on subjecting the user to a UI that I find barely usable at best).

Because this aspect of it doesn't really have anything to do with
NetBSD kernel discussion, I'll be dropping tech-kern from the recipient
list after this message, when discussing this aspect.
