And even more gross... but probably preferable. Assuming there aren't
cases where it gets to that point and *doesn't* already have the lock,
but there shouldn't be. I think.

I would expand the comments a bit maybe, but otherwise if it solves
the problem, do you want to commit it? I have zero (as in zero, not
even infinitesimal) time to look into it or anything else for the next
couple weeks. :-|
