Somkething like this has been needed for a long time.  A very cool use

...leads me to ask, what about other things, such as mv, ln, ln -s, and
objects other than device files in /dev?  While I can't speak for
anyone other than myself, I don't consider support for that sort of
thing in /dev optional (for other than devfs-development systems).
