OK, I will go and re-acquaint myself with the details.  I understood
from the discussion that I could modify some parameters in the kernel
and have them later recorded for further use (cf. discussion of the ACPI
option setting).  So I thought I'd lose some if the kernel got hosed and
I could not save the configuration settings that got me there.

If you feel like saving me further embarrassment, you can explain what
I'm missing in private mail :-)
