I don't know that this will be true for all platforms.  I don't see
everything switching to GPT as the default & native format, but I do
expect to see support for recognizing GPT to be at least optionally
present for most (or even all) ports.

As you mention, there are some ports that need a native disklabel
format (or some sort) to boot.  That and supporting legacy systems
will prevent the disklabel code from going away for a long time, if
ever.
