Of course not if you are running X. Rui's suggested change
doesn't work to switch from X (graphics) mode into text
mode console neither.

The switch via Ctrl+Alt+F1 works fine if you are on text console,
even when system is dropped to ddb.

I've implemented the automatic switch to console on ddb enter
some time ago (in 1999) - see systm.h rev. 1.96 and related Debugger()->
cpu_Debugger() changes through kernel. It was backed off later
precisely since it's entirely redundant.
