I agree.  I see the point of having non-free (or non-BSD-licensed)
bits kept segregated, but perhaps /usr/src/sys/contrib instead of
/usr/src/contrib/sys would address der Mouse's complaint* about
needing bits not under /usr/src/sys and still meet the segregation
goals.

*I am very sympathetic to being able to create a separate kernel
 source by just copying sys.  Of course you still need a complete
 toolchain (host and cross), but that's separate from what you'd have
 to duplicate.
