It's there because (MBR-) slices didn't cut it, at least if you are not only
looking at i386 and MBR.

I wouldn't consider doing some half-hearted extension like "slices", while
we already have a vision of a real solution. I'd say lets shake out the
implementation details (and there are many of them) and straight go to full
blown wedges.
