The ATA limit is 28bits (128Mb) - disks are already bigger that it!

IIRC one of the solutions is for the disk to have a 2 entry
fifo on some (all?) of the LBA sector number registers.
Using different read/write commands and allows (at least) 48 bits
of address space.

I think someone else planned something different.
Also there is the possibility of ATAPI disks.
