The _font_ can hardly be UTF-8 encoded, as UTF-8 is a variable length
multibyte encoding, and fonts need to be indexed with an N-dimensional
(typically N=1 or N=2) index code.  Don't you mean UCS (Unicode
Character Set) encoded?
