Actually, that was with a couple of day old current.  Using today's
current I can mount it "ro" and read it just fine.  Neat!

        mount -t msdos -r /dev/wd1e /mnt 

Mounting it "rw" gives some soft (correctable) errors/timeouts.
Perhaps this is some file access-time being updated?
