McKusick is working on a background fsck, but as far as I know it's
not available yet.  The idea is that the only errors (except media
errors) that you can get with soft updates are with data that's marked
as busy by can be reused and you can run the gc process of finding and
cleaning these in the background.  See section 6.1 in the Usenix 1999
paper.
