Will any standard tar be able to handle the resulting tar-files
properly?

P.S.: I don't like the idea of hardlinks to symlinks 
very much, but I think I can live with it :-) IMHO
it's making things more complicated where they don't
need to. This shows in the fact, that you need to
fix the other tools handling with files. I'd expect
other userland code, not written/controlled by us
might break/fail on these changes as well. (Yes,
I got the message, that solaris is doing it as well).
