FWIW, I've seen this as well on an AMD 486/120.  I had attributed it to
the bottom-of-the-line motherboard I was using, but could it be an
AMD-specific problem?  This was under 1.1 and 1.2, and I don't see this
problem on either of the systems in front of me (a 586 and a 686, under
-current and 1.2.1 respectively)...
