Well, there's DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol).  I'm working
on a freely redistributable DHCP server for the Internet Software
Consortium, and I may hack a DHCP client implementation for NetBSD as
part of the testing process.  This isn't likely to happen in the next
week or so, but it would provide a complete and bootparam-free
solution eventually.
