I've never used a gzipped kernel on my NetBSD 10 macppc (a G4 laptop).
Might be a size issue, although I see my current 10.1 GENERIC kernel
is

-rwxr-xr-x   1 root  wheel  12862312 Dec 16  2024 netbsd*

so not a lot of daylight between that size and your problematic
kernel's.  Perhaps it's something else, but I dunno what.
