Absolutely, the macbook 2006 runs i386 mode very well, but the problem 
is when you try to use any version of 64Bits. I cannot install any 64-bit 
operating system.

Also, try MBR rather than UEFI for booting.   I have a 2006 macbook and
I use MBR booting.   I am running i386 mode on it (by choice, because I
wanted to have an i386 machine still for testing), and I haven't tried
amd64 mode on that particular device.
