I think it's a combination of documented .PATH and .SUFFIXES targets.
share/mk/sys.mk has the necessary .SUFFIXES line.

You can always volunteer for updating man pages if you think it's worth.
(as I did to timecounter(9) family on fixing ALTQ ;-p)
