If a device is detached, it can recursively take its
children with it (which are to some likelyhood immediately
following in the device list).
(This reminds me btw of a problem we had a while ago where removal
of IPv6 interface addresses caused their solicited node multicast
address to disappear too, crashing the box on interface removal.)
