"cal" is in SUSv3, so there is little room for
improvement if we want to stay compliant.

btw, I like the "ncal" which comes with FreeBSD (and
is also distributed with Debian/Ubuntu/etc) more, for
various reasons. It can replace "cal" as well (depending
on argv[0]), so the bloat is limited.
Just something to consider...
