The latter. The kernel hangs on ifconfig(8). (can't get ddb(4) prompt)

If the interface name for gsip(4) will be changed,
you should post a headsup on current-users and
update all kernel config files and man pages.

Anyway, I don't think it's a good thing to commit
such changes without any review or test.
There are some certain users of gsip(4).
