   It should happen when that disk is attached.  If you plug the disk in,  
   that's attaching it, right?  (Either via the USB/FireWire dynamic  
   attach mechanism or by virtue of booting up.)


what about the case of writing a disk image to an already attached
disk and wanting the (new) label processed?  it seems some userland
way to kick this off is useful...
