In general, yes, you should. However, if you have a set of code that is known to work on at least one or two platforms, and the changes to adapt others are completely mechanical, then compile testing is generally sufficient. The port maintainers can pick up any mess that might get made.


I'm more than happy to make changes and compile test only.  After
com(4), I have most of the tool chains already built.
