ok, then, how about:
        1. you revert unnecessary changes after a couple of weeks
           as you said.
        2. then, i create a branch.
        3. while i'm working on the branch, you can do your
           "time consuming step".
        4. once i merge or abandon the branch, you'll do the
           "changes themselves".
