Pull up revisions 1.218-1.219 (requested by mycroft in ticket #572):
  Several fixes mostly related to USB:
   o Separate page 4/5 reading into separate functions.  For
     ``removeable'' devices, try page 5 first.  Fixes problem
     with some broken USB devices which do not handle page 4
     correctly.
   o Add prototypes for recently added functions.
