   I'm not sure I entirely agree. There are branches/tags of xsrc for 1.5
   and 1.6 available. There is no reason people can't use those if they
   need to.


and if they want a newer X11?  we have always kept xsrc portable in
the past and there are good reasons to continue doing so.  for a
start, the upstream maintainers generally don't like patches that
break older operating system versions.
