Indeed there should, and there is. :)
Well, the range is 0..255, and the minimum delta can be queried
by an ioctl (if the driver supports it).
If you do a 'mixerctl -v -a' you can see the deltas displayed.

And, btw, I also dislike stateful mixer controls.
