thank you very much christos. i can now remove a hack i have had
in my copy of CVS ever since i started using it, namely, to use
".CVS" dirs instead of "CVS" dirs. now i can just put "cvs -D .CVS"
in ~/.cvsrc! yay!

Does it work for "." ? I.e, store the bookkeeping files in the
   current directory..

For extra credits, can it rename the bookkeeping files to have a
   prefix like ".CVS-" ?

I could do with 10000 less subdirectories per copy of the NetBSD
   source tree... :)

it isn't quite enough to do this yet, but it's a good step...
(in particular, the files are still named eg "/Entries" so there
neds to be someway to avoid that.. for "-D ." stuff you'd also
need to add some more ignore patterns (for all the files.)

.mrg.
