I like having ed(1) as a utility. 

But a better argument than any one program's intrinsic worth is
the following: you will never win the floppy-overflow battle by
eliminating utilities, because the kernel and installation sw
will only get larger as time goes on. That's mostly a good thing,
so you should prepare for it.

In the long run, deleting more and more utilities is obviously the
wrong direction to move in.  It's better to bite the bullet and go
to a multiple-disk install like alpha and i386 did years ago.
