I'd just point out that FreeBSD has been doing the cross building
dance for some time and it still needs an UPDATING file when things
change that impact users.  It isn't just for things that get you down
when you are building, but also for when things need recompiling due
to API changes, when default settings change, etc.

It also happens to have building information in it.  But to each his
own..
