It appeared to me that the 4.4BSD was moving toward /var/spool/output,


this may be the case.


i think it is the wrong thing.  "/var/spool/output" to me has no
connection printers, or lpd specifically, where as "/var/spool/lpd"
is very tightly bound to lpd.  it's not like the format and protocol
used in this directory is "public" and you could share it with any
other printer software (just like a mail queue).
