OK - I bite this time. No, it should not be vi. Vi is not user
friendly - period. A person typing edit is not going to expect vi, if
they _do_ type edit and get lime/edit/whatever and expect vi then I
would expect them to know what to do about it. Let's face it, people
who want to use vi will type vi - people who type edit are not likely
to know vi and are going to get stuck. Trying to explain to a newbie
that they need to change the EDITOR environment variable to change
away from vi would suck rocks.

Don't lose sight of what the original idea was - a small, simple
editor for the install disk, vi is not small weighing in at about 250k
stripped on the i386. Contrast that to what I have written - 30k
(slightly less actually).
