what's the value in actually ditching it?

Look at the st of hardware we support, and that's still running out
there in the world.

Yeah, hopefully the behaviour wouldn't be needed, but actually
expecting people to use sane configurations & not-ridiculously-loaded
machines is probably expecting too much.
