Not entirely, but I _do_ think that if I used some other system than
lpr (for instance, the sysv "lp" stuff) I don't want to have to teach
programs about this.

It was a real PITA on SGI machines, where both Berkeley and sysv
printing was installed.  Few programs knew which to use, and those which
guessed got it wrong about half the time.
