Log Message:
Changed so that log entry format used when logfiles are rolled over 
matches that of syslogd(8).  This is a slightly modified version of
the patch Thorsten Lockert supplied with PR #684.

Changed manpage to reflect the fact that we are using gzip instead
compress.
