Re: NetBSD/vax 11.0RC1

Hi,

I'm still on "buidl tools", in the gcc directory, since Saturday.
It is SLOW ...

Indeed:

https://zia.io/notice/ApcQFtLpYuuRnPqN8a

unfortunately, my 512gb system has soft-hung while building tools/gcc,

Now I really envy you. Never heard of a 512gb VAX :)
Sorry, couldn't resist ...

There was a company that offered a service where they upgraded your 4000/90 / 90a / 96 to support 64 meg SIMMs, larger cache and faster SCSI, so although they were likely rare, they did exist.

As I wrote before, some of the files really use >256MB and compile for hours, swapping

I'm sure this is even worse now than with NetBSD 10.

it's soft because getty was still responsive in the terminal, but trying
to login hangs before it / as it runs login -- i get no password: prompt.

This is my #1 problem with running bulk pkgsrc builds for VAX - the hangs.

and worse, i've failed to figure out how to force ddb from the console
(really a pty in my screen session), as the normal method to set the
break string to +++++ is failing -- it's set, but the driver does not see
to notice them, and the driver seems to have the right code in place to
do this... if anyone wants to look at that, would be great -- how to
enter ddb when setting hw.cnmagic=+++++ or similar. even how to generate
a serial break from the console...

I can't even remember the last time I saw the kernel debugger work. I'll have to give it a try to refresh my memory.

John
