Indeed, I've seen recommendations that the number passed to -j should
be *twice* the number of available cores, provided other resources
don't limit it futher.  (I've never seen it made clear whether that
applies to real cores or hyperthread virtual cores for hyperthreaded
CPUs, but AIUI hyperthreaded VAXen do not exist, so that's a
sub-question of little relevance here.)
