NetBSD -9 status update on vax hardware
First of all thanks very much to Martin and Ragge for the quick fix
regarding the 5380 scsi controller bug on the vaxstation 3100.
Doing maintenance on some of my system (like the 3100m76 psu repair) I
found some time to test netbsd-9 on them.
It's nothing more than an simple install and basic testing of the
system, nothing fancy, just to see what's working out of the box.
I can report that on the installer run quite well with no trouble on the
following system:
Vaxstation 4000 VLC - 24Mb of memory, 73Gb scsi disk
Vaxstation 4000/60 - 48Mb of memory, 4Gb scsi disk
Vaxstation 4000/90 - 80Mb of memory, 4Gb scsi disk
Vaxstation 4000/96 - 80Mb of memory, 4Gb scsi disk
Using the latest patch from Ragge I can also get -9 to work without
problem on a Vaxstation 3100m76 - 24Mb of memory, 4Gb scsi disk
I had no luck on other systems where I'm sure there are long standing
bug (not something new to -9):
Vaxstation 3100m30: on this system -9 with the latest Ragge patch can
see the scsi device but I get constant error when formatting the
filesystem with newfs (cg 0: bad magic number), same problem with -8 and
-7 and maybe even older release (I'm sure I've seen something similar in
the past with -6)
Vaxstation 2000: on this one the mop bootloader from -7 -8 or -9 doesn't
work (it loads from the network but doesn't execute), with an older
loader I can get the system to start loading the kernel but all I get is
an endless stream of error (stray interrupt: vector 0x18, ipl 31), -7 -8
or -9 doesn't make any difference
Vax 4000/600 with 256Mb of memory: the loader from -9 cdrom goes
straight into a "machine check error", hadn't had any time to test any
other release or test the system with less memory.
All the system tested is running pretty solid with OpenVMS so I don't
think the problem could be hardware related.
If I will find the time (or a way to get access to the system, some are
in a remote location that's now out of my reach) I'm also gonna test on
a microvax 3100m30, a 3100m10, and a microvax 3500.
